When Facilities Meet Fascinating – Bart Choat Travels to Kodiak, Alaska

By Sara Krassin

With its recent acquisition of Building System Solutions (BSS), Parallel Technologies increased its building automation offerings, expanded its geographical reach, and gained 11 outstanding employees with a diverse range of talents and expertise.

Application Engineer Bart Choat first discovered BSS while looking for help with some systems updates that he was hoping to make, at the four buildings he managed for a publishing company in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Choat entered the facilities maintenance and building controls fields after graduating with a degree in biochemistry from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, where he also studied computer engineering.
Choat’s interest in engineering was renewed by his new facilities maintenance position, and with the support of his employer he began taking classes in HVAC technology to expand his expertise.

After working with BSS to implement his desired facilities systems updates at the publishing company, Choat was surprised to receive a job offer from BSS President Jay Stark. Choat initially declined. But a couple of years later he was ready for a change, and he approached Stark to see if the offer still stood. Choat began working for BSS in 2014, and on his second day on-the-job he took off for Kodiak, Alaska.

Over the past three years, Choat has spent a significant amount of his time managing BSS’s projects in Kodiak. This includes projects for: The Special Operations Forces Cold Weather Maritime Training Facility – Naval Special Warfare Cold Weather Detachment Kodiak, Coast Guard Base Kodiak, and Kodiak Island Housing Authority.

Choat says that though the midnight sun (24 hours of sunlight) and polar night (24 hours of darkness) can be hard to get used to, he enjoys life in Kodiak for all of the outdoor activities it offers. His favorites are: ocean kayaking, hiking, fishing, and wildlife photography.

Parallel Technologies is happy to have Choat on board and excited to share his talents and expertise with the rest of the team. Starting with his stunning photos below!
