Parallel Technologies’ New Hire – Katie Bensen

Parallel would like to welcome Katie Bensen, M.E., to the Mechanical & Electrical team as an Infrastructure Project Manager. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of St. Thomas in 2010, including a minor in Mathematics. Along with her studies, Katie was a Peer “SolidWorks” Mentor where she supervised a prototype lab and led weekly help sessions. Early in 2015, Katie will complete the requirements to earn a Masters of Technology Management.

Katie is a mechanical design leader with skills in new product development, design for manufacturing, rapid prototyping methods, and lean product development. Her product design experience includes machining, sheet metal, and injection molded plastic. She also has expertise in SolidWorks, experiment design, test set up, data collection, and analysis.

Starting in 2009, Katie worked for Datacard Group in Minnetonka, first as a Mechanical Engineering Intern. She participated in a government bid for security technologies and was responsible for prototyping design, test, analysis and producing production parts. In 2010 Katie moved into a Mechanical Engineer role and was the mechanical lead of the international design and manufacturing team. She went to China on two occasions, both for extended periods of time; first for three weeks, then for one month. While there, Katie taught the China team SolidWorks, helped to finalize the design, prototyping, and supplier selection as well as setting up the manufacturing line.

Katie grew up in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Along with her schooling there, she began playing volleyball in 5th grade and in High School, led the team as captain during one of her two years on the varsity volleyball squad. Katie also participated in softball, track & field, speech team, and choir. She is an experienced singer, another talent she began honing in 5th grade. A special accomplishment was achieved early in high school when Katie earned her Girl Scout’s Gold Award in 2003.

Volleyball has remained an important part of Katie’s life since her high school days. While in college, she played on a competitive, intramural team and for the last four years has been the volleyball Director of the Developmental League and coach at Club 43 in Hopkins.

Katie has been a member of the Society of Women Engineers since 2006. She served as the University of St. Thomas’ chapter President in 2009 and as an officer in both 2007 and 2008.

Some activities Katie enjoys during her free time these days are: alpine skiing, scuba diving, BWCA, working on home improvements and spending time with family and friends.

Parallel is proud and excited to have Katie join our team and we share her enthusiasm about our collaboration in 2015 and beyond!
