ISC West – April 14-17, 2015

ICS West is the largest security industry trade show in the US. At this year’s show over 1,000 vendors were present, displaying the latest and greatest in security technology. The 2015 show also drew more than 25,000 security professionals from around the world.

Highlights from this year’s show included the introduction of 4K and 360 degree cameras by most major manufactures, advancements in biometric technology and the emerging market for body cameras.

4K cameras have been available for a couple of years but they made their presence known at this year’s show. Every major manufacturer we stopped at featured a demo of their new 4K cameras.  4K provides superior image quality of 3840 x 2160 pixels which is essentially 4 times the quality of high definition images. While 4K offers a crystal clea image quality it also puts additional pressure on the network due to the size of the images. When considering 4K keep in mind the specific use case and if this high resolution camera is necessary to achieve the security you are looking for in a given area.

360 degree cameras were also featured heavily at this year’s show. Old ‘Fisheye’ lenses are being replaced by better camera and lens technology making the entire field of view more usable because of camera or client-side de-warping. These cameras are making a play against traditional PTZ cameras because there are no moving parts which can break down over time as well as increased situational awareness because the camera is always recording the entire field of view.  This type of camera is commonly used at intersections, hallways and parking lots.

Biometrics continues to be seen more commonly as businesses try to ensure the security of their facilities and assets. Safran Morpho won the show’s ‘Best New Product’ award with the MorphoWAVE. This touchless fingerprint scanner is the first of its kind and has the ability to integrate with a variety of access control and attendance systems. To learn more about this product Click Here.

We won’t get into the political tension surrounding body cameras but wanted to point out that there were more body camera vendors present than in previous years. Many law enforcement agencies attend ISC West and it is a great opportunity for them to take a look at different options in the marketplace.

Overall the show was a great experience to not only see what’s new and exciting in the industry but to network with other professionals and manufacturers. Attendance in 2015 was higher than it has been in the past and many people commented on how the industry continues to grow at a rapid rate.
